“Come on, you can do this,” he muttered to himself, the words failing to buoy his spirits. The email, a cold, impersonal missive, had confirmed his worst fears. The company was being acquired. He felt a deep sense of resignation, a profound apathy settling in his bones.

He shuffled through the papers on his desk, the familiar tasks seeming alien and pointless. Even the simplest of functions required a Herculean effort. The day stretched before him, an endless expanse of obligations and uncertainties. He just wanted to go home and lie down.
